Gender & Equality Status Report

Positive atmosphere and culture:
Nigerian women are very active in leadership roles, entrepreneurship and the corporate environment. The richest black woman in the world, Folorunsho Alakija and the VP of World Bank, Arunma Oteh are Nigerians. The present and past finance ministers are women. The country can boast of several other outstanding women and professionals.

Negative atmosphere and culture:
The entertainment industry, politicians and religious institutions frequently exploit women and girls for personal gains. The gov't needs to demonstrate more commitment to women and children. Abuse of women, barbaric practices and gender inequality is very evident, especially in Northern Nigeria. The Senate recently passed a law to continue the practice of young girls marriage. A Senator recently threatened to rape a female Senator and bragged their would be no consequence if he did. Boko Haram abducted over 200 girls aka #bringbackourgirls campaign. The President is perceived to have a demeaning opinion of women
